MAIL SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION, INC. (MSMA) is the largest national non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of the Mail & Distribution Industries.  Founded in 1981, MSMA has 21 local chapters and more than 2,200 members nationwide.  The Great Plains / Omaha chapter was established in 1985.  MSMA events are designed to provide a meeting place for mail and distribution systems managers to share information, build professional recognition and grow as professionals.  The specific and primary purposes for which MSMA is formed and for which it shall be exclusively administered and operated are:

  • To provide a professional organization for people employed in the field of mail and distribution systems in business, industry, government and institutions
  • To offer a local, regional and national structure of meetings, conferences, seminars, training classes and publications to raise the level of professionalism and competence of personnel employed in the mail management field at all levels.
  • To stimulate communications by offering a variety of newsletters, manuals and other publications to aid in the dissemination of professional information developed in the field of mail and distribution systems management
  • To raise the level of management prestige and esteem for managers employed in this specialized segment of business operations
  • To offer awards for contributions to the advancement of the art of mail and distribution systems management
  • To encourage members to share their knowledge and experience with others in the field

Certification:  In order to enhance and maximize efficiency, top management now looks to a new breed of professional mail managers.  These managers possess knowledge of advanced mail distribution technology, and professional management and administrative skills.  To recognize these professional managers, MSMA has established the Certified Mail and Distribution Systems Manager (CMSDM) program.  This accreditation process provides for an individual to be evaluated, tested, and certified on the body of technical knowledge and management skills necessary for performance in the profession.

Recognition:  Each year, the Association presents 3 major awards in recognition of exceptional contribution to the mail industry.  These awards, presented at the spring MAILCOM Conference include Manager of the Year, Distinguished Service Award, and the Chapter of the Year Award

Cliff Bennett Memorial Education Award:  MSMA’s National Board, in conjunction with MAILCOM, Mail Magazine and Pitney Bowes sponsors an annual educational program in memory of Cliff Bennett.  This award is presented at the fall MAILCOM Conference to the MSMA member who best exemplifies the goals of Cliff Bennett – the advancement of the mail & distribution systems professional.

MTAC Representation:  MSMA is represented on the Postmaster General’s Mailers’ Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC).  MTAC is comprised of organizations, which represent mailers and other associations/organizations related to the mailing industry.  The purpose of MTAC is to provide a means in which mailers and the US Postal Service can share technical information, advice and recommendations on matters concerning mail-related products and services in order to enhance customer value and expand the use of these products and services for mutual benefit.
